How to design your outdoor space in Spain with a modular sofa?
In the Mediterranean sun, you live outdoors. But unlike in the Netherlands, this requires a different way of looking at your garden or terrace. Don’t start with furniture, start with zones that move with the sun, shade, and how you use the space.
Start with these 3 zones:
Lounge & relax zone
For coffee in the morning sun, reading a book, or perhaps a little siesta. Think: comfort, soft fabrics, and light tones for that relaxed “barefoot living” feeling.
Sun & pool zone
Follow the sun. Flexible modules and removable back cushions make it easy to shift between sun and shade throughout the day.
Social & dining zone
For drinks, dinners, and long summer evenings. Whether it’s a romantic dinner or a gathering with friends and family, you can easily adjust the setup to the group size.
The big difference with the Netherlands? In Spain, you use your outdoor space almost all year round, throughout the entire day, and in changing conditions. Modular design isn’t a luxury, it’s practical.
One modular outdoor sofa, flexible lay outs
With a modular garden sofa, you’re not choosing a single function, you’re choosing flexibility. The same elements can create entirely different setups.
How it works in practice:
-
Lounge sofa; a comfortable corner sofa in the shade or spring sun
-
Sunbed; stretch out in the sun, with a shaded seating option for the hottest part of the day

-
Social seating; arrange as two separate sofas
-
Siesta spot; a mini lounge island or daybed
Tip: keep at least 80 cm of walking space around a freestanding setup -
Indoor use; stylish enough for your living room or guest room; ideal as a temporary sofa bed or winter setup

This is exactly where modularity makes the difference: with just three elements, you can switch from a corner sofa to spacious loungers, from a lounge island to an indoor sofa.
Ideal: fewer pieces of furniture, more freedom. Click here for the options.
Colour advice for outdoor furniture in Spain
In coastal areas like Catalonia and Costa Brava, you need different materials for your outdoor textiles and furniture. The elements of this modular sofa are built on an aluminium frame with quick dry foam and upholstered in 100% solution dyed polyester.
-
Quick dry foam: a foam that allows water to drain quickly, ideal for outdoor use, especially near a pool
-
Solution dyed fabric: the colour is added to the fibre before the fabric is woven, resulting in high UV resistance (lightfastness level 8) and long lasting colour
In this case, multiple yarn colours are combined to create a subtle melange effect, giving the fabric a soft, comfortable look in both warm and cooler weather.

Why warm beige works so well outdoors in Spain
Mediterranean outdoor living likes warm beige tones. Therefore this fabric is a very conscious choice. Reason is that in the Spanish sun colors appear much brighter and harsher.
If you want to add contrast, use custom outdoor cushions, flexible side tables, or a matching outdoor parasol for sun protection. Especially natural tones match well, such as:
-
SAND & TAUPE
-
TERRA
-
OLIVE GREEN
-
INDIGO BLUE
Tip: colors often appear less intense in the Spanish sun than you expect from the Netherlands. Choose 1 or 2 shades warmer or richer than you normally would do in Holland.
Rental-proof outdoor lounges: what to consider?
Do you rent out your home as well? Then ease of use and durability matter even more.
Advantages of a modular garden sofa:
-
Easy to adapt to different group sizes
-
But also easy to adapt if you move from a terrace in Barcelona to a lounge area in Costa Blanca
-
Flexible layouts for different moments of the day
-
Quick to cover and protect in case of unexpected weather
Important consideration: the pool area!
The sunlounge elements are waterresistent and solution dyed. But if you plan to use the sun loungers near the pool in rental situations, you may consider alternatives like sun lounge cushions made to measure with high performance fabrics (click here for our waterproof fabrics):
-
these sun lounge cushions are 100% waterproof (instead of waterproof)
-
highly durable also when intensively used with wet swimming cloths and sun protection
-

!Nomad Note! 5-minute closing routine
Leaving for a longer period or expecting rain? You can store and protect your sofa elements in just a few minutes:
-
Make sure cushions and elements are completely dry before storing
-
Remove the loose back cushion
-
Place the element on its side and unzip the bottom
-
Take out the rain cover and store the back cushion
-
Close the zipper and place the element upright again
-
Cover the element properly with the rain cover
-
If possible, place it under a roof or sheltered area
👉 Proper maintenance and storage are essential to extend lifespan and prevent mould.
Extra tip:
outdoor textiles in Spain or a Mediterranean climate.
During the season garden furniture and outdoor textiles used in Spain need some extra care due to nature. For instance from march to may the pine trees produce a lot of polen. And in early spring or autumn there might bigger temperature gaps on the country side between day and night. So depending on the season and location your outdoor space may also deal with:
-
pine needles
-
Sahara sand
-
inland temperature drops
-
coastal air and salt
In these cases, we recommend to use the raincovers as extra protection for your modular garden sofa during the season.
